Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1850s.

The box comes with a working taselled key; once opened the top-notch brass fittings are evident with the back of the lock and all the hinges beautifully engraved. There is a makers plaque in Ivory engraved by the luxury manufacturer, "Pearce, Maker, 77 Cornhill, London".

Unusually there are fitted stationery compartments, too small for modern day stationery but perfect for business cards, receipts etc. The box is complete with the two most magnificent original inkwells, again beautifully engraved, in keeping with the rest of bras fittings.
This type of writing slope or lap desk are not usually fitted with secret drawers, but this one is. On the side of the right hand side inkwell compartment is a pressure point which releases the Satinwood panel covering the three secret drawers all with the original blue velvet lining.
Excellent in every way. Measuring 15" x 9 3/4" x 4 1/2" tall at rear, while closed.
