Scottish Grandfather Longcase Clock Dundee

19th century
Description

A fine quality Scottish Grandfather longcase clock in the original London style case. Choice flame mahogany veneers with marquetry satinwood fan inlays. A raised plinth moulding and shaped base skirting. Brass stopped hood and trunk columns. Side glass hood apertures and surmounted by 3 original brass finials. An early example of a painted dial of 'London layout' with raised gilt corners, square silvered date aperture, seconds and strike/silent to the arch. An 8-day duration mechanism striking the hours on a bell.

James and Thomas Ivory of Dundee are listed in Baillies' 'Watchmakers and Clockmakers of The World' book as working from 1762-1825. He is noted as a maker of repute with an example in Amsterdam museum. In Brian Loomes 'Grandfather Clocks and Their Cases' book in page 189 he explains in detail examples of Scottish clockmakers 'importing' these 'high fashion' cases from London. An example by Kirkland of Glasgow in a London case is illustrated.

This is a rare opportunity to purchase such an example.
