Magnificent Hand Painted Set Counter Boxes by Jennens & Bettridge C.1840

Description

A museum quality gem of a box made by the most famous Papier Mache manufacturer, Jennens & Bettridge, Japanner to George III and The Prince of Wales in 1816. The underside has the highly sought-after impressed mark "Jennens & Bettridge, London"; the London branch at West Halkin Street in Belgravia was opened in 1837, we date this box to c.1840.

The shaped outer box is hand painted with a Romantic riverside garden scene with the gentleman fixing the ribbon in one of the lady's hair.

The box contains another five heirloom quality boxes each hand painted and so crisp and vibrant having been protected over the last 150 years by the outer box. These boxes would have been used to house gaming / games counters, each one shaped on the outer edge to fit exactly into the shaped case.

Quite extraordinary and without damage (usual surface crazing). The outer box measures 11" x 10".
