Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1870s.
The lid has a wonderful Ivory button knob to the front to open the lid, and a pin on a chain to keep the lid secure. The tray within is where the butter would sit with ice beneath to keep it nice and cool.

This example is lucky enough to be covered in diamond shaped registration lozenges, enabling us to identify the design dates to November 4th 1870.
Elegant and very usable in excellent condition, measuring 8 1/2" handle to handle and 5 1/2" deep (inc. Ivory knob) x 4" tall.
