Georgian Mahogany Longcase Clock Sherborne

18th century
Description

A fine quality Georgian mahogany longcase clock with an arched hood pediment surmounted by fretwork. A wavy hood edging and fluted brass capped hood columns. Excellent colour and patination to the wood. Chamfered trunk sides. A raised base moulding and standing on ogee bracket feet. A brass and silvered dial with date and seconds indicators. Well cut blued steel hands. A high quality 5-pillar, 8-day duration mechanism striking the hours on a bell.

Simon Aish of Sherborne (spelt 'Sherborn' on the dial) is recorded in Baillies' 'Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World' book as working from circa 1700-1750.
