Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1850s.
The two pillars at the front have carved Mother of Pearl top and bottom, and a carved lozenge crowning the top of the lid. The box stands on six carved Satinwood feet, four at the front and two at the back. There are two turned Satinwood handles with Mother of Pearl inlay in the centre.

As if the outside wasn't special enough, the interior is a real miracle, with a near complete and original set of sewing implements made from bone and Mother of Pearl, engraved and inked in blue creating an exquisite display. There are numerous cotton spools, a tape, aide memoir with bone leaves with the day of the week on the top of each, fruit knife, needle case & winders.

The box has retained all the original paper lining, quite remarkable, I think that this box has been tucked away for many, many years to have remained in such wonderful original condition.
Inside the lid is the original mirror surrounded by the original plus purple velvet with the Mother of Pearl latch which opens the lid to reveal a compartment for papers and letters.

The box is inlaid with a makers plaque, engraved " Pearce, 77, Cornhill, London ".
A wonderful box in excellent condition, the key is for display only and not working but an excellent finishing flourish. The footprint measures 13 1/2" x 10 1/2" x 8" tall.
