Grandest Antique English Inlaid Satinwood Sewing Box C.1850 by Pearce, London

19th century
Sold by Puckerings
Description

This is the creme de la creme of antique sewing boxes, firstly, most unusual to be in Satinwood with the fine quality all-over inlay, this work is more usually seen in Rosewood.

The inlay is top-notch, created from engraved and inked Mother of Pearl, Abalone shell and fine brass stringing. The two pillars at the front have carved Mother of Pearl top and bottom, and a carved lozenge crowning the top of the lid. The box stands on six carved Satinwood feet, four at the front and two at the back. There are two turned Satinwood handles with Mother of Pearl inlay in the centre.

As if the outside wasn't special enough, the interior is a real miracle, with a near complete and original set of sewing implements made from bone and Mother of Pearl, engraved and inked in blue creating an exquisite display. There are numerous cotton spools, a tape, aide memoir with bone leaves with the day of the week on the top of each, fruit knife, needle case & winders.

The box has retained all the original paper lining, quite remarkable, I think that this box has been tucked away for many, many years to have remained in such wonderful original condition.

Inside the lid is the original mirror surrounded by the original plus purple velvet with the Mother of Pearl latch which opens the lid to reveal a compartment for papers and letters.

The box is inlaid with a makers plaque, engraved " Pearce, 77, Cornhill, London ".

A wonderful box in excellent condition, the key is for display only and not working but an excellent finishing flourish. The footprint measures 13 1/2" x 10 1/2" x 8" tall.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
