Fowey River Antiques has dated this piece to the 1880s.
Very much of the Sheraton revival period the quality of workmanship and attention to detail is quite superb.
The frames are constructed of mahogany which has mellowed over the decades into a rich colour with wonderful grain and patina. The back panels have finely executed carving with decorative inlay in satinwood with delicate floral motifs and then the stringing around the legs and back supports.
They have just been professionally reupholstered using traditional techniques using capoc and are fully sprung, the seats being covered in a champagne coloured silk fabric with diamond motifs and then finished with brocade edging, it compliments the colour of the mahogany beautifully.
They stand in wonderful square tapering legs to the front and nicely splayed legs to the rear.
They measure 36" high at the back, 22" wide and the seat height is 19"
A pair of Victorian armchairs beautifully proportioned in a classic and elegant design which would grace any period or country home, also very versatile as they can be placed in any room in the house including a bedroom, sittingroom or used individually as a desk chair.
