Top Notch English Brass Bound Mahogany Document Box with Deck Lock C.1820

Description

An exceptional large and solid box created for travel whether it was a Captain's box or created for Stagecoach use, it dates to the George III period, around 1820.

Made from solid Mahogany, it is heavily brass bound with quality screwed construction. Once opened the heavy steel key is found which was used to screw down to furniture or the deck to stop it from moving or being stolen. Either side has a heavy cast brass carrying handle.

An unusual mechanism is used to open the panel on the interior of the lid, the middle pin on the lock is pulled upwards which releases the panel with a section underneath for storage of papers.

A magnificent and impressive size, measuring 17" x 12 1/4" x 5 1/2" tall. A hefty weight, but domestic & international shipping is included, so no need to worry about that.
