Antique French Gilt Brass Portico Clock

19th century
Description

Antique French Gilt Brass Portico Clock

~ French - Circa 1880 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A stunning original French antique Portico clock. It is in the style of Louis XVI and is designed to show the gilt brass pendulum visibly swing below the movement. The movement is supported above 2 Corinthian columns and an elaborate rear panel fretted with scrolling foliage. The break fronted, cushion shaped base is blind fretted and sits upon two ionic capitals and two acanthus scroll feet. To the top is a an urn with pineapple final and trailing floral handles. It is heavily modelled in gilt brass with beautifully chased detail.

The dial is also gilt brass with 12 individual enamel cartouches and blued steel hands. The rear door is also glazed to allow the movement to be seen.

The French movement is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. The gilt brass pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running!

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration and there are no losses. The dial is also in excellent condition just some tiny nibbles next to the winding holes and some occasional slight fading to the lettering.

Complete with original pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.

Dimensions of clock:

inches: Height 17 1/2", Width 10 1/2", Depth 5 1/4"

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
