Grandmother Clock by Gillett & Johnston

1900 - 1920
Description

Retailed by H. Pidduck & Sons - Southport

A high quality antique grandmother clock by this well known maker.

The two train 8 day movement striking the quarters and hours on nine rods with tune selection for either Whittington or Westminster chime. The substantial regulator movement with deadbeat escapement, maintaining power, beat adjustment, two brass weights and unusual lozenge shaped pendulum bob. The finely engraved silvered brass arch dial with Roman hours, blued steel hands and strike/silent facility to the arch. The small mahogany case of excellent proportions with a long trunk door with reeded canted corners and elaborately shaped bevelled glass. The base with a single shaped plinth and recessed panel with ornate moulding. The hood with a broken arch top and well cut sound frets to the side, reeded canted corners and bevelled glass to the hood door. Height: 5'8½"

Note: The movement is stamped with Patent No: 2524220. This was applied for in 1920. Henry Pidduck & Sons are still trading today in Lord Street, Southport. Gillett & Johnston are also still trading in Croydon. They specialised in Turret clocks and public clocks. They also supplied bells from their own Foundry. We recently sold an identical clock by this maker. Its most likely that they were made at the same time to order but whats most unusual is to come across two in such a short space of time.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
