Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1800s.
Most caddies of this type are not created in this way, become badly damaged and the colours are lost forever, leaving a brownish all over appearance.

This example is too larger than the norm, measuring 8" across the top x 5" deep x 5 1/4" tall (excluding finial). The case is made from Mahogany with Kingwood cross-banding to the top trimmed with Ebony and Boxwood stringing.

The top panel is quite stunning with a background of paper quills in Teal Blue with a border in a Dusty Pink decorated with a garland border and floral and foliate motifs in a metallic gold. These naturalistic themes are carried around the sides in the various panel.

The interior reveals the Pine carcass, and a single Mahogany lid opening to reveal a two compartment caddy.
Dating to around 1790, this fine example is in excellent condition; a fine addition to any advanced collection.
