Porthouse Penrith Longcase Clock

Description

A good quality Cumbrian oak longcase clock. A caddy pediment and gilded front and rear hood columns. An arched trunk door. A brass and silvered dial with date aperture and corner spandrels. A well constructed 30 hour mechanism striking the hours on a bell.

John Porthouse of Penrith is a noted clockmaker. He was born in 1728 and died in 1787, the family of clockmakers are well documented with illustrations in Loomes' 'Clockmakers of Northern England' book. They unusually often signed the dials with the first owners name, this example is for Thomas Stephenson.
