Bow Fronted Stick Barometer by Worthington & Allan of London

An exceptional Flat-To-The-Wall Bow Fronted mahogany stick barometer by these well known makers.

The silvered brass scale calibrated from 27" to 31" and engraved with weather indications. Also with a sliding vernier controlled with a bone set key to the main trunk and the makers name finely engraved to the lower left corner. The thermometer with a silvered brass scale calibrated from 30º to 110º Fahrenheit and from 5º to 35º Reaumur, contained within a mahogany moulded surround with a bowed glass. The superbly made mahogany case of excellent workmanship with figured veneers to the bowed front and a bowed glass to the main scale with cushion moulding above. The base with an ebonised cistern cover, ebony mouldings, further ebony inlay to the sides and a transportation screw built within the case. The case also with ebony line inlay and ebony mouldings throughout the main trunk. Height: 38½"

Note: Nathaniel Worthington & James Allan were excellent instrument makers. Their quality and workmanship originate from their Masters Matthew Berge & Jesse Ramsden. Worthington was apprenticed to Berge and took over the business with Allan in 1819 at 196 Picadilly, London.

Historical Fact: Around the period that this barometer was made the first Railway in a Capital City was built from London to Greenwich.
