Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1850s.

These two conical snuffers are simply held by the little knob on the top while extinguishing a candle, I wandered how this would work and whether it would heat the metal up quickly to burn the fingers .. so I have tested them. Simply held over the candle and lifted up, the snuffer did not get hot enough to cause concern and worked perfectly.

The tray is exceptional with a pierced or reticulated gallery all around the shaped base which stands on three decorative foliate feet. The figural handle on the side has a Dolphin attaching it to the base and scrolls up to a terminal in the form of a head, lovely detailing.

The underside has some lovely markings, the fist the silver plate makers mark for George Richmond Collis of London and Birmingham. There is another three marks " G.R. Collis & Co. " / " Manufacturer " / " Church St. Birm ".

George Richmond Collis succeeded Sir Edward Thomason in 1835 at 28 Church Street, Birmingham moving in 1868 to Cambridge Street, Birmingham. This clearly dates this piece between 1835 and 1868.
A lovely and most unusual piece in excellent condition, a few scratches here and there commensurate with age. The base measures 7 1/2" long x 5" deep excluding handle.
