Large Antique English Hand Painted Papier Mache Jewelry Box C.1870

Description

A wonderful grand example, this exquisite Jewellery box made from Papier Mache looks to have been made by Jennens and Bettridge but is unmarked, it certainly looks like his work.

The top is hand-painted with the most exquisite still life of a floral bouquet, beautifully executed. The sides are decorated with hand-painted Birds of Paradise in a chinoiserie style with bright lively gilding.

The interior has been professionally re-lined in green leatherette paper and rich green velvet, creating a smart clean finish ready for use. There is a central section to house a pocket watch, perfect for sitting a bracelet today. There are two ring compartments that run up each side which would house six to eight rings each.

Dating to around 1870, this Victorian work of art is in excellent condition, complete with working key. An impressive and imposing size, measuring 13 1/2" x 9 1/2" x 4 1/2" tall.
