Scottish Longcase Clock by James Nicol of Cannongate

18th century
Description

An excellent Scottish Longcase Clock with Moonphase feature to the arch.

The 8 day duration movement striking the hours on a bell and with recoil anchor escapement. The full brass dial with a separate silvered brass chapter ring surrounded with brass Urn Spandrels and enclosing a matted centre, seconds, square date aperture and finely made blued steel hands. The Moonphase feature to the arch with very well engraved phases of the moon with a blue background and gold stars. The makers name of James Nicol of Cannongate, Edinburgh engraved on the dial plate above the Moonphase. The Hemispheres with engraved flowers and foliage.

The mahogany case with plain mahogany throughout with early cross grained mouldings to the trunk , hood and base. The trunk with a long trunk door and brass escutcheon. The plain base with a single plinth. The hood with plain mahogany angle pillars capped with brass Doric capitals and also with quarter pillars to the rear of the hood. The flat top with intricate satinwood sound frets to the front of the hood.

Height: 7'3¼"

Note: James Nicol was apprenticed to Alexander Brand in 1721. There was an example of his work in The Royal Bank of Scotland, Edinburgh. This clock was originally in the collection of the Graham-Stirlings of Strowan House, Perthshire.

Historical Fact: The area of Cannongate was a separate small town within the heart of Edinburgh until 1856.
