Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1850s.
I actually found this one in Canada some years ago and have now got around to having it professionally restored, it was covered in a permanent incorrect polish over both the wood and brass; the restorer had to painstakingly remove all of the brass and remove the old finish. Well worth the wait with the magnificence of the two materials coming together to shine.

The interior reveals an original fitted interior for with rarely seen fitted boxes for " Stamps " and " Matches ". Both long boxes are removable and are mounted with fine engraved gilded plaques, quite spectacular. The interior of the lid has been re-lined in a green taffeta.

Another sign of this box's fine quality are the engraved lock and hinges, and in between the hinges an engraved plaque " Austin Maker Dublin ".
A real gem of grand proportions and spectacular decorative appeal. Excellent condition, measuring 10" x 5 1/4" x 7 3/4" tall. Complete with working key.
