Antique Gilded Carriage Clock with Relief Work

19th century
Description

An exceptional French carriage clock. A multicoloured relief work dial and side panels in gold and silver. Birds and floral decoration against a matt black/blue background. A gilded case with concave moulded work and a reeded carrying handle. Push button repeating to the 8-day duration mechanism striking the 1/2 hours and hours on a gong. The original lever escapement. Made for the French market as marked 'Aiguilles' for hand adjustment. Circa 1885.

An example of this relief work is illustrated on page 160 of Derek Roberts carriage clocks book. He quotes 'This must have been one of the most time consuming methods of decorating a carriage clock'. These examples rarely come onto the market.
