The Seine Near Giverny, Normandy, Ca 1960, French Post Impressionist Oil on Canvas

1940 - 1960
Description

A light-filled oil on canvas depicting activity on the Seine near Giverny, by the Normandy painter Georges André Doublet.

Doublet had been a pupil of the Impressionist painter Pierre Maubert (1884–1957), and after his marriage settled at Vernon, neighbouring Giverny, the village forever associated with Claude Monet and the landscapes of the Seine.

This beautiful stretch of the Seine became the principal inspiration for Doublet's work, and the artist's love for this part of Normandy shines through.

He concentrates on its changing light and colour: the cool blues, greys and mauves of the river and distant hills are set against the vigorous greens and ochres of the near bank, while ouches of pale blue, pink and cream give the water a sense of movement. The paint is applied freely and robustly, almost sculpturally. The dark mass of the moored boat in the foreground provides a strong structural centre to an otherwise luminous composition.

Measuring 33 x 41 cm, our oil on canvas is signed at the lower right. The overall size in a hand-patinated whitened oak frame is 39.5 x 48 cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Post-Impressionist landscapes are defined by expressive brushwork, thick impasto application of paint, and a focus on capturing natural light and atmosphere. Artists extended beyond strict Impressionism by placing greater emphasis on structured compositions, subjective colour choices, and tactile surface texture.

Artists typically painted with oil-based pigments mixed with linseed oil, applied onto stretched linen or cotton canvas. The canvas was prepared with a gesso primer layer, and structural support was provided by wooden stretcher bars held together with corner keys.

Authentic period works display natural age signs such as fine paint cracquellure, slight canvas relaxation, and age-related darkening of the unprimed reverse. Signatures, artists monograms, or original gallery labels on the frame or stretcher bars also assist in confirming provenance.

A Post-Impressionist oil painting functions well as a focal point above a console table, fireplace mantelpiece, or sideboard. Pair it with warm accent lighting and complementary neutral backdrop tones to highlight the subtle colour variations and textured surface of the artwork.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent pigment fading and canvas warping. Dust the surface gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, and avoid applying commercial liquid cleaners or water directly to the paint surface.
