Victorian Pitch Pine Trunk / Chest with Internal Drawers

Description

Perhaps the finest Victorian trunk I’ve had the pleasure of handling. Constructed in pitch pine with exceptional grain, fine Victorian dovetails to the corners, a moulded plinth base, and iron carry handles to either side.

The trunk retains its working lock and key, while the interior has been fitted at a later date with a candle box and lower drawer, adding useful storage.

Condition Report

In excellent solid antique condition. There is evidence of historic woodworm to the front and sides. The pattern of the evidence suggests this may have been present in the timber before the chest was constructed, or that the piece has previously been heavily stripped. In either case, the worm is historic and no longer active.

Pitch pine became widely popular during the Victorian period due to its strength, straight grain, and water-resistant resinous properties. It was extensively imported from North America and used throughout Britain for utility furniture, school fittings, and church joinery.

Authentic pine trunks were built using solid softwood timber joined with heavy hand-cut dovetails at the corners for structural integrity. They were commonly finished with wrought iron side handles for transport, internal till boxes, and a sturdy plinth base.

Look for hand-cut dovetail joints on the corners, original iron keyhole escutcheons, drop handles, and signs of hand-planing on the underside or rear boards. Authentic period pieces also display natural oxidisation of the pine, giving it a warm, amber-toned patina.
