Early 20th-century Brass Pullman Table / Wall Lamp

1900 - 1920
Description

An early 20th-century brass Pullman-type lamp of excellent weight and quality, retaining its hanging eye and functioning comfortably as either a table lamp or wall light. This lamp is both practical and characterful.

The detailing is particularly strong: a beaded edge to the base, foliate (possibly feather-inspired) ornament rising through the fluted column, and a brass thumb screw allowing the lamp head to tilt up to 90 degrees in either direction. Terminated with a brass bayonet bulb holder.

An engaging, well-made piece with real presence.

Condition Report

Excellent antique brass condition. Unpolished, with natural patination retained. Recently rewired and PAT tested. The tilt mechanism is slightly firm due to the new cord and should ease with use.

The photographs form part of the condition report, so please review them carefully. Further images or a video viewing can be provided on request. Viewings are welcome at our Southampton unit, strictly by appointment.

If you have any questions regarding this piece, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the early 20th century, Pullman lamps were compact lighting fixtures designed for luxury railway passenger cars, offering directional illumination for travellers.

These lamps were constructed primarily from cast or spun brass to withstand movement, often featuring weighted circular bases or pre-drilled flanges for wall mounting.

Authentic period fixtures exhibit natural surface oxidisation, functional key or socket switches, heavy brass weight, and traditional screw-thread assembly methods.

Position the lamp on a timber desk, a side table, or wall-mount it as a bedside reading sconce to introduce warm metallic contrast to contemporary decor.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid abrasive chemical polishes to protect the developed natural patina.
