Victorian overmantel mirrors were constructed specifically to mount directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, featuring a flat base to rest flush against the shelf and an arched or moulded upper frame designed to accentuate high ceilings.

These mirrors were constructed with a softwood or lime wood carcass covered in gesso plaster, which was detailed with moulds before micro-thin gold leaf was applied over a clay bole base.

Authentic 19th-century examples typically feature hand-carved wood beneath visible gesso, subtle cracking or crazing across gilded areas, solid timber backboards, and mercury or silvered glass showing natural foxing.
