Superb Dr Wall / First Period Worcester Porcelain Tea Canister C.1770

18th century
For Sale by The Fancy Fox
Description

A fabulous Worcester porcelain tea canister of ovoid shape with vertical faceting. Finely hand painted in an oriental style with alternating panels of underglaze wet blue ground and reserved white. The blue panels each with a central red ground boss containing a white & gilt daisy flower with its leaves trailing in gilt over the blue ground. The white panels are painted with stylised chrysanthemums and prunus blossom in a kakiemon palette of red, green, blue and turquoise enamels with gilt accents. Fretted square mark to the base, c.1770.

It measures 11.8cm (4 5/8") high and 7.5cm (3") wide.

In excellent condition with no damage, repair or restoration. It has a fine hairline at the rim which is linked to manufacture as there is a noticeable thinness to the porcelain at this point and a distinct depression in the glaze along which the line has formed. Minimal handling wear, the enamels and gilding are all lovely and bright. Below the alternating panels is a patterned blue frieze which has run a bit during firing. It is missing its original cover as is often the case but comes with a very finely turned stained wooden replacement for optional use.

Declaration

The Fancy Fox has dated this Worcester Porcelain Tea Canister to the 18th Century.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

First Period Worcester porcelain refers to ceramics produced by the Worcester Tonquin Manufacture between its founding in 1751 and 1783 under the direction of Dr John Wall.

These canisters were crafted using a soft-paste porcelain body containing soapstone, which was decorated with underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze enamel colours, and gilded accents.

Authentication relies on evaluating the greenish translucency of the soft-paste body, inspecting period factory marks such as the open crescent or fretted square, and analyzing the hand-painted enamelling.

Smaller ceramic vessels can be displayed on a sideboard top, arranged inside a glazed display cabinet, or styled alongside contemporary neutral stoneware to create visual contrast.

Clean gently by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding soaking and abrasive materials that could erode overglaze enamels and gold leaf decor.
