Description

A superb small Worcester porcelain sweetmeat dish with "blind earl" rose moulding. It has a scalloped shaped rim and moulded stem handle with finely modelled rosebuds trailing around the edge. The dish surface surface with relief moulded sprays of rose leaves. Very delicate hand painted floral sprays in an early palette of pink, grey-green, orange, sulphur yellow and inky purple-blue enamels. A small device is painted in an ad hoc manner to the handle to help disguise some kiln spotting, a charming feature. Finished with a simple gilt rim. Unmarked, c.1765.

It measures 15.2cm (6") by 14.4cm (5 5/8") wide and 4cm (1 1/2") high.

In excellent condition with no damage, repair or restoration and minimal handling wear. There is a small underglaze chip to the foot from manufacture.

FAQs

The Blind Earl pattern was designed at the Worcester Porcelain Factory around 17551760. Named after George Cowper, the 8th Earl of Coventry, who lost his sight, the design features raised, embossed rose leaves and rosebuds originally intended to be appreciated by touch as well as sight.

First Period Worcester porcelain was produced using a soft-paste body that incorporated soapstone (steatite) sourced from Cornwall. This specific formula allowed the porcelain to withstand thermal shock from hot liquids better than standard soft-paste alternatives of the period.

Authentic First Period Worcester ceramics often display a distinctive greenish translucent hue when held to direct light. They frequently feature factory marks such as a fretted square, crescent mark, or workmans mark, combined with hand-painted overglaze enamels and crisp relief moulding.

A small decorative porcelain dish can be elevated on a acrylic or brass stand on a sideboard or mantelpiece. Alternatively, it serves as a functional trinket dish on a dressing table or bedside table for holding small jewellery items.

Clean gently by hand using lukewarm water and a non-abrasive, mild liquid detergent. Avoid submerging items with delicate gilding, never use dishwashers or harsh scouring pads, and avoid putting pressure on branch handles or moulded elements.
