Cheshire Antiques Consultant Ltd has dated this Edwardian Bronze Portrait Plaque to the Edwardian era.

The rectangular relief portrays Gordon almost frontally as a mature bearded gentleman in formal dress. His name JAMES GORDON and dates 1824-1901 are incorporated directly into the sculptural composition.

An indistinct signature appears at the lower left. Previously interpreted as C. Gates, closer examination suggests A. Gates is the stronger reading.
Of particular importance, Alice Gates exhibited a portrait entitled The late James Gordon, Esq. at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, in 1902, catalogue no. 1480.

The documented exhibition work was described as a plaster medallion. The present bronze could therefore represent a bronze version or related memorial adaptation, although this has not yet been conclusively established.

For this reason the work is responsibly catalogued Attributed to Alice Gates rather than definitively by the sculptor.
Probably dating to circa 1902, the relief demonstrates accomplished naturalistic modelling, particularly through the sitter's face, beard and hair. The dark brown-black historic surface is enlivened by rubbed bronze highlights and areas of naturally developed verdigris.
