Gents 1950s Elgin Shockmaster Wrist Watch, Box & Papers

1940 - 1960
Description

Gents 1950s Elgin Shockmaster wrist watch, box & papers.

The watch has an Elgin calibre 642 hand-winding movement which is working nicely. This is the 17-jewel model, it also came as a 15 jewel version. The 642 was first introduced in 1950 but this particular model is post 1955, the year when Elgin stopped using chronological serial numbers.

The watch measures 32mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the very handsome shaped lugs. The case is stainless steel and the front and sides are in lovely condition. The screw-on case back has some marking where a tool has slipped in the past. The case back mentions Durapower Mainspring, one of the first alloy mainsprings, invented in 1947. The case back also states that the watch is water resistant but, as with any vintage watch, it should be kept away from water and moisture.

The lens is in lovely condition.

The very handsome dial is in its original finish with segmented centre surrounded by concentric circles. Signed Elgin, together with the dp logo for Durapower. Original hands and subsidiary seconds dial.

A new leather strap has been fitted.

The watch comes with its original Elgin presentation box, original guarantee and original information booklet. The box has an old repair to the lid, but this is only cosmetic.

Declaration

The Vintage Wrist Watch Company has dated this 1950s Elgin Shockmaster Watch to the 1950s.

Please contact us regarding international shipping.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Introduced in the mid-20th century by the Elgin National Watch Company, the Shockmaster line was engineered with improved shock-resistant movement protection for enhanced durability.

Wristwatches from this era commonly featured stainless steel or gold-plated cases, acrylic crystals, metallic dials, and genuine leather straps.

Authentic pieces feature clear brand marking on the dial, movement identification stamps inside the case back, and period-correct typography across the face.

A vintage dress watch pairs effectively with formal tailoring or casual smart wear, serving as a subtle historic accent against modern cuffs.

Mechanical watches require periodic professional servicing, avoidance of water exposure, and gentle manual winding to keep the internal mechanism running smoothly.
