Rare Early 20th-century Rowntree’s "Elect Cocoa" Architectural Vitreous Enamel Sign, Circa 1910

1900 - 1920
Description

Rare Early 20th-Century Rowntree’s "Elect Cocoa" Architectural Vitreous Enamel Sign, Circa 1910

Originating from a highly prestigious private collection of vintage enamel signs, this magnificent five-foot architectural fascia panel is a premier surviving example of early 20th-century British commercial advertising.

Striking Aesthetics: Rendered in a deep, lustrous cobalt blue vitreous enamel field, the piece features crisp white cursive script branding alongside the proud royal coat of arms and the coveted "Makers to H.M. the King" designation (Edwardian/George V period, circa 1910).

Condition: Presented in strong, honest antique condition. The heavy-gauge steel retains its brilliant high gloss, accompanied by expected, characterful edge weathering and minor surface rust that authenticates its decades of outdoor service.

Structural Integrity: The original mounting eyelets remain intact and structurally sound, preserving the panel's integrity. Even the reverse exhibits the raw, oxidized character true of authentic period manufacturing.

Measuring 152.4 cm wide by 38.1 cm high (approx. 60 x 15 inches), this display-dominating sign is an exceptional statement piece for any serious collection or interior design project.

Weight: 6.5kg approx

Disclaimer: This piece is part of an exclusive single-owner collection featuring approximately 20 to 30 exceptional vintage enamel signs currently available for acquisition.

Due to the substantial 5-foot dimensions and weight of this architectural panel, collection in person is strongly advised By Appointment Only.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Vitreous enamel signs were widely produced from the late nineteenth to mid-twentieth century for commercial promotion. Made by fusing powdered glass to a heavy sheet iron base at high temperatures, these signs offered exceptional weather resistance and colour retention for outdoor shopfronts.

These signs were manufactured using a rolled steel or iron sheet onto which multiple layers of glass enamel paste were applied. Each colour layer was stencil-applied or hand-painted and fired individually in a high-temperature furnace, creating a durable, glossy surface with distinct graphic relief.

Authentic period signs exhibit heavy-gauge metal construction, noticeable weight, and subtle relief in the enamelled lettering. Look for natural age-related oxidisation around fixing holes, maker marks, and sharp typography that cannot be replicated by modern flat screen-printing.

Enamel advertising signs serve as focal points when mounted in modern kitchens, dining areas, hallways, or commercial interiors. They contrast effectively against bare brick, painted timber panelling, or neutral plasterwork, adding historical character and graphic design to industrial or rustic schemes.

Clean vitreous enamel gently using warm water, mild liquid soap, and a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, wire pads, or harsh chemicals that can scratch the glass glaze, and treat exposed rusted iron edges with a thin coat of microcrystalline wax to prevent further oxidisation.
