Large Japanese Imari Charger, C19th. 63cm Diameter

Description

An exceptional 19th-century Japanese Imari porcelain charger of impressive proportions, measuring 63cm in diameter. The central medallion depicts an elegant phoenix amongst flowering peonies and foliage, richly painted in underglaze cobalt blue, iron red, green and lustrous gilding. Surrounding this are intricately patterned borders incorporating geometric diaper designs, floral roundels and decorative cartouches. The broad rim features finely detailed figural panels alongside landscape scenes depicting traditional bridges, rivers, buildings and elegantly dressed figures. The reverse is decorated in underglaze blue with scrolling foliage, geometric borders and character marks. A wonderfully vibrant and highly decorative example of Japanese Meiji-period porcelain craftsmanship throughout.
