A wonderfully large and impressive Japanese Imari porcelain charger, measuring 71cm (28 inches) in diameter, exuberantly decorated in the traditional palette of underglaze blue, iron red, green enamels and rich gilding. The central medallion depicts a magnificent phoenix poised above flowering paulownia branches, framed by scrolling borders and brocade reserves. Surrounding panels contain lively figural scenes beneath blossoming trees, alternating with dramatic coiled dragons amid clouds. Butterflies, floral sprays and elaborate gilt arabesques enrich the pale blue diaper-patterned ground, creating a remarkably dense and harmonious composition. The reverse is painted in underglaze blue with trailing flowering foliage and a geometric border. Monumental in scale, richly coloured and finely detailed, this spectacular charger makes a commanding decorative statement in any interiors.

FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ware produced in the Arita area of Hizen province from the seventeenth century onwards, named after the port of Imari from which it was shipped to European and domestic markets.

These pieces are constructed from dense porcelain clay, featuring underglaze cobalt blue decoration complemented by overglaze enamels in iron-red, green, and aubergine, along with hand-applied gilded highlighting.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces exhibit hand-painted brushwork with slight natural variations, rich cobalt blue tones visible beneath the glaze, unglazed foot rims displaying age-appropriate surface wear, and characteristic spur marks.

Large chargers can be mounted on focal walls using appropriate heavy-duty display brackets, presented upright on plate stands atop sideboards, or integrated into framed architectural wall arrangements.
