Antique Bow Porcelain Sparrowbeak Creamer Jug with Polychrome Flowers, C.1760

18th century
Description

A rare antique Bow Sparrowbeak creamer jug, handpainted with polychrome flowers under an arched and dotted border.

Some restoration to rim, shown in pictures in both natural and UV light. There is a small flare when the UV light is shone on the handle - I believe this to be just a splash of paint. A faint hairline to the rim, photographed at 4x zoom.

All items can be posted safely worldwide.

Declaration

White Robin Antiques has dated this Bow Porcelain Sparrowbeak Jug to the 1750s.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A sparrowbeak creamer jug is a small vessel designed for serving cream or milk, named for its distinctive small, pointed spout resembling a birds beak. Popularised during the mid-to-late eighteenth century in Britain, these jugs were manufactured by major early porcelain factories including Bow, Worcester, and Lowestoft as part of tea and coffee services.

Early Bow porcelain was crafted using a soft-paste body incorporating bone ash, white clay, and crushed frit. Pieces were fired at lower temperatures than hard-paste porcelain, glazed, and then hand-painted with overglaze enamel pigments before undergoing a final low-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic soft-paste porcelain pieces from this era often exhibit slight translucency with a warm or creamy hue when held to light. They may feature subtle manufacturing imperfections such as tiny firing specks, slight weight variation, and hand-painted enamel decoration that feels slightly raised against the glaze.

Small antique ceramics can be displayed individually or in groupings on a dining room sideboard, dresser shelf, or within a glass display cabinet. They can also serve as small decorative stem vases for fresh florals on a console or side table.

Clean soft-paste porcelain gently by hand using tepid water and a mild, non-abrasive liquid soap. Avoid soaking, dishwasher use, harsh chemical cleaners, or scrubbing overglaze enamels, as these can wear away hand-painted details.
