Description

A Monumental and Exceptionally Rare Matched Pair of Chinese Carved Hardwood Figures of Daoist Immortals

Qing Dynasty, Early 19th Century (Jiaqing Period, 1796–1820)

Presented as a magnificent, museum-quality statement pair for the elite scholar’s studio or refined interior, this substantial matched duo of Chinese hardwood figures depicts revered Daoist Immortals (Baxian tradition) during the height of the Jiaqing period (1796–1820). Masterfully carved in-the-round from dense, heavy tropical timber, each sculpture is hewn from a single, unbroken log measuring an impressive 42.5 cm in height and possessing extraordinary physical heft (2.220 kg and 2.136 kg respectively).

The figures are imbued with a commanding, lifelike presence: one immortal gently cradles the peach of longevity, while his counterpart bears a sacred staff and traditional attributes. Their heavily folded, flowing robes cascade downward with deep, crisp undercutting and fluid momentum, entirely free of modern assembled limbs or pieced elements. In true classical scholar's tradition, the reverse of each garment has been intentionally left in its natural, untouched organic log state, celebrating the undulating wood grain and the conservation of precious raw material.

The bases are composed entirely of sharp, geometric, faceted triangular and diamond-shaped rockwork formations mirroring legendary mountain retreats. The dense timber exhibits a warm, rich reddish-brown patina with magnificent chatoyancy, further authenticated by period-original adze and chisel toolmarks visible across the unpolished flat-cut undersides.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Figures of Daoist immortals were crafted during the Qing dynasty as expressions of spiritual iconography and decorative art, representing longevity, prosperity, and wisdom within traditional belief systems.

Craftsmen typically utilised dense, high-grade hardwoods such as rosewood, zitan, and hongmu, which allowed for the rendering of intricate details like facial expressions and flowing drapery.

Period pieces display characteristic hand-carving tool marks, natural age-related surface patination, and smooth wear on elevated surfaces, while the rendering of robe folds reflects historical imperial motifs.

These sculptures are traditionally placed on a sideboard top, mantelpiece, or within open display cabinets to act as focal points, contrasting against contemporary neutral backdrops.

Maintain a stable indoor humidity level away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting, dust gently with a soft dry brush, and apply microcrystalline wax sparingly.
