C19th Grand Tour Serpent Bronze Table Oil Lamp - Converted for Electricity

19th century
For Sale by Artsonline
Description

This is a wonderful and highly unusual original 19th-century Grand Tour Bronze Table Oil Lamp, beautifully embellished with a striking swan-neck/serpent-form handle.

Dating to the second quarter of the 19th century, circa 1830-1840, this magnificent Classical Revival piece is believed to be of Italian or French origin.

The bronze lamp has a beautifully shaped shallow reservoir with classical gadrooned decoration beneath, together with an impressive sculptural serpent-form handle that rises dramatically from the rear.

The bronze has developed a spectacular, rich and naturally aged patina and is of excellent quality and good weight.

The lamp is raised upon a finely decorated circular socle and remains mounted upon its original variegated marble plinth, which complements the aged bronze beautifully.

Note: At some point during its long history, the oil lamp was converted for use with electricity. The existing electrical fittings have not been tested, and the lamp will require professional rewiring should the new owner wish to use it as an electrically operated table lamp.

More recently, I have personally been using the piece as a rather fabulous incense burner, simply by placing an incense capsule within the floral-shaped lamp holder.

Whether displayed purely as a decorative Grand Tour object, used as an incense burner, or professionally rewired and returned to service as an electric table lamp, this is a wonderfully decorative and increasingly difficult-to-find 19th-century piece that displays beautifully.

Attributes

Condition

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Grand Tour bronze oil lamps are nineteenth-century decorative pieces modelled after ancient Roman and Greek artifacts. Purchased by travellers visiting Italy and Greece on educational tours, these items synthesised classical antiquity with Victorian interior taste.

These lamps are typically cast in solid bronze, often featuring a chemically patinated or gilded finish. They are frequently mounted onto dark marble or porphyry bases to provide stability and visual balance.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display high-quality lost-wax casting details, natural patination in recessed areas, and hand-finished surface chiselling. Converted pieces often feature historical drill holes or modified nozzles designed to accommodate modern electrical wiring.

Place the lamp on a dark wood desk, library sideboard, or mantelpiece alongside leather-bound books and architectural sketches. The bronze and marble surfaces introduce sculptural interest to refined modern or traditional schemes.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush. Avoid water, harsh chemical detergents, and abrasive polishes, as these will strip the delicate historic patina from the metal surface.
