Antique Victorian Mahogany Open Armchair C.1880

19th century
For Sale by MebleinUK
Description

A beautiful and characterful antique open armchair, dating from the late Victorian period, circa 1880

The chair has an elegant, restrained design with a tall open back featuring a finely reeded upper rail and an attractive pierced central panel decorated with a sequence of oval motifs.

Particularly attractive are the long, gently shaped wooden armrests, supported at the front by slender turned uprights with finely ringed decoration. The straight legs are joined by stretchers, creating a strong and well balanced traditional frame.

The chair has been finished with a striking deep blue velvet upholstered seat, providing an attractive contrast against the warm, dark tones of the timber.

Its relatively compact proportions make this a very versatile antique chair. It would work particularly well as a desk chair, occasional armchair, bedroom chair, hallway chair or statement chair within both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Seat Height: 42 cm

The timber retains a rich aged colour and attractive patina, with the small variations and signs of previous use that give an antique piece its individual character.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian open armchair features an exposed timber frame with un-upholstered space below the armrests, a cushioned seat panel, and structured back support. Originating in the late 19th century, these chairs served as functional seating in studies, dining halls, or parlours.

Craftsmen primarily utilised solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and oak, assembled using mortise and tenon joinery. Seats were structured with internal webbing and springs, trimmed with fabrics including velvet, horsehair, or wool damask.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-finished details like reeding or turnings, hand-cut joinery, and a natural surface patina developed over time. Look for subtle timber grain irregularities and evidence of age on the frame underside.

Position the armchair as an accent seat alongside a contemporary side table or integrate it into a dedicated home office setup. Combining rich mahogany tones with neutral wall palettes provides a balanced visual contrast between period timber and modern finishes.

Dust the timber frame regularly using a dry microfiber cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish annually to protect the grain. Keep the chair positioned away from direct radiator heat and direct sunlight to avoid wood shrinkage and fabric discolouration.
