Austrian Hand Painted & Gilded Moon Flask Vase Signed Baston C.1890

19th century
Description

Austrian Hand Painted & Gilded Moon Flask Vase Signed Baston c.1890

A fine quality hand-painted and gilded porcelain moon flask vase, dating from the late 19th century and almost certainly of Austrian manufacture.

The vase stands on four moulded gilt feet with twin angular handles and a gilt rim. The front features a finely executed portrait of a lady in a feathered hat and purple gown, signed Baston to the lower right. The reverse is richly decorated with raised tooled gilt foliate ornament.

The portrait remains vivid, and the gilding retains good brightness. There are some stained hairline cracks to the rim which appear stable and confined to the upper section

Dimensions:

Height: 23.5 cm

Width: 19 cm

Depth: 7 cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A moon flask, or pilgrim flask, is a flattened circular vessel featuring two handles and a narrow neck, inspired by traditional water canteens and popularised in European porcelain during the late nineteenth century.

These pieces are constructed from fine hard-paste porcelain, decorated with hand-applied enamel paints for miniature portraiture, and finished with burnished gold gilt detailing on the handles, rim, and feet.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit brushwork under magnification, artist signatures near the painting border, period factory marks impressed or stamped on the base, and natural wear to the gilded edges consistent with age.

Place the flask on a mantelpiece, console table, or shelf as a standalone accent piece where lighting highlights the gilding, pairing it with clean-lined contemporary ceramics or dark wood surfaces for visual contrast.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth or dry soft-bristled brush, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners, water immersion, or harsh friction that could wear away delicate gold leaf gilding or hand-painted enamels.
