Fine 19th Century French Carved Gilt Wood Console Table Base by Felix-alfred Ternisien

18th century
Description

FINE 19TH CENTURY FRENCH CARVED GILT WOOD CONSOLE TABLE BASE BY FELIX-ALFRED TERNISIEN

This fine console table stands on two giltwood legs, with hoof feet. These legs have been intricately decorated with carved foliage and fluting and topped with floral swags. The foliate tops support a giltwood frieze, which has been exquisitely carved with multiple floral swags which hang down from the frieze.

Ternisien stamped twice upon the frame.

Felix-Alfred Ternisien was born in Paris on June 28, 1817 and was most probably the son of the cabinet maker Jean-Joseph Ternisien. In 1860 his firm was recorded at 42, rue Fontaine-au-Roi and then from 1870 onward at 234, rue Saint-Honoré. Cabinet maker but also decorator, he was commisioned by the emperor Napoleon III to provide the furnishing of the imperial train in 1856 following drawings by Viollet le Duc. In 1874, the comte de Paris commisioned the restoration of the château d'Eu to Viollet le Duc and the renowned architect subsequently asked Ternisien to execute the furnishings following his drawings. The furnishings can still be viewed in the museum Louis-Phillipe at the château d’Eu.

This console table has been beautifully designed and executed by Ternisien and the quality of its finish and the attention to detail is exquisite.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Characterised by Neoclassical design principles, 19th-century French Louis XVI style console tables feature symmetrical forms, fluted aprons, floral festoons, and curved or tapered legs inspired by classical Greek and Roman motifs.

Craftsmanship typically involved hand-carving dense timber, applying multiple coats of gesso plaster, and laying micro-thin gold leaf over clay bole, followed by burnishing to achieve a gilded surface finish.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, natural wear on high-relief areas exposing the reddish-brown clay bole beneath, and historic patination in the recessed carved areas.

A console base can be fitted with a custom marble top and positioned against a focal wall beneath modern artwork or a clean-lined mirror to contrast historical ornament with contemporary layout.

Cleaning should be limited to gentle dry dusting with a soft microfibre cloth or camel-hair brush, avoiding water, liquid polishes, and fluctuating humidity levels that can soften gesso and detach gold leaf.
