Herbert Dicksee "His First Night from Home" Etching

1900 - 1920
Description

Herbert Thomas Dicksee was a British painter born in 1862. He was best known for his sensitive depictions of animals including dogs, lions and tigers. Dicksee's family was well-ingrained into the art world; his father was an artist and his nephew, Sir Frank Dicksee, was the president of the Royal Academy in London from 1924–1928. Herbert went on to study at the Slade School of Art in London on a scholarship, and his first painting was exhibited in 1881. Many of Dicksee's most famous works were transcribed into prints and etchings published by Klackner of London. He died on February 20, 1942 in Hampstead, England.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

British animal etchings from this era focused on sympathetic and detailed portrayals of domestic pets and working dogs. Printmakers used intaglio techniques to capture delicate fur textures and soft tonal gradations, appealing to popular period interest in canine subjects.

An etching was produced by coating a metal plate with acid-resistant wax, incising the design with a stylus, and submerging the plate in acid to bite lines into the exposed metal. The prepared plate was inked and passed through a high-pressure press to transfer the image onto heavy paper.

Authentic prints feature an indentation known as a plate mark pressed into the paper around the image border. Period originals also typically bear an pencil signature by the artist in the lower margin and do not display modern mechanical halftone dot matrices when viewed under magnification.

A monochrome antique etching can be framed in a modern, slim dark frame with an acid-free mat to create contrast. Hanging the artwork as part of a gallery wall alongside modern line drawings or minimalist photography creates a balanced, eclectic aesthetic.

Keep prints in a stable climate away from direct sunlight, dampness, and high humidity to prevent discolouration and foxing. Ensure all framing materials, including backing boards and mounts, are acid-free, and use UV-protective glass to limit light exposure.
