Fine Flemish Silver Silver Pierced Fruit Spoon C.1800

19th century
Description

Fine Flemish Silver Silver Pierced Fruit Spoon c.1800

A finely cast and pierced continental silver fruit or compote serving spoon, almost certainly Flemish or Dutch in origin, dating from the late 18th to early 19th century. The deep relief-moulded bowl depicts a charming fruit-harvesting scene: four female figures gather fruit beneath a tree, with one climbing a ladder, another in the branches, and two collecting the harvest below. The pierced design allows juice to drain when serving soft fruit or compote.

The handle is elaborately pierced with scrolling rococo motifs and features a standing winged female figure, possibly an allegory of Autumn or Abundance. The piece is unmarked but confidently identified as solid silver, showing the tone, weight, and softness.

Measures 8 x 2 x 21 cm

Weight 79.8 g

Offered in very pleasing antique condition. Lovely quality

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Flemish pierced fruit spoons are specialized serving utensils originating from the Low Countries, designed with openwork perforations in the bowl to sift sugar or serve preserved fruit without excess syrup.

These items were generally crafted from solid silver using casting, hand-piercing, and repousse embossing techniques to form detailed relief figures, floral patterns, and decorative borders.

Authentic pieces typically feature historic continental regional hallmarks, irregular hand-cut pierced elements showing hand-tool marks, and subtle wear across high points of relief decoration.

Silver servers can be displayed inside glazed cabinet displays, mounted in custom shadow boxes, or integrated into formal dining table settings alongside period glassware.

Clean gently with a soft cloth and specialized silver polish, using a soft-bristled brush to remove residue from pierced crevices, and store in anti-tarnish cloth covers.
