Description

Large Antique Spanish Colonial Carved Hardwood Bench - Late 18th / Early 19th Century

A superb and unusually substantial Spanish Colonial carved hardwood bench, dating from the late 18th to early 19th century.

At an impressive 260cm (over 8½ feet) wide, this is a particularly large example with real presence. The tall back is richly carved with scrolling fruiting vines and florets, interspersed with rows of finely turned spindles, a decorative treatment repeated across the lower front rail. The substantial plank seat has developed wonderful surface, wear and character through generations of use.

Despite its scale, the open spindle construction gives the bench a surprisingly light and architectural appearance. The warm, time-worn hardwood and extensive hand carving make it a striking decorative piece, while its extraordinary width also makes it genuinely practical for seating a crowd.

A wonderfully characterful statement piece for a large entrance hall, country house, kitchen, dining room or commercial interior . The wonderful craftsmanship makes this very difficult to ignore.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Spanish Colonial style furniture originated between the 16th and 19th centuries across Spanish-influenced territories. It is characterized by sturdy hardwood construction, hand-carved floral or geometric relief patterns, turned spindles, and utilitarian proportions influenced by Iberian traditions.

Craftsmen typically utilised locally sourced native hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or cedar. Construction methods relied on joinery techniques including mortise-and-tenon joints, wooden pegs, and hand-chiselled relief carving rather than modern adhesives or metal fasteners.

Authentic pieces exhibit irregular hand-carved details, signs of historic wear along contact surfaces, non-uniform spindle turnings, and hand-hewn undersides. Oxidation and age-related darkening in the crevices of timber carvings also indicate period origin.

A substantial carved bench acts as a focal architectural piece in an entrance hall, expansive foyer, or along a long dining space wall. Pairing the timber structure with minimalist contemporary artwork or neutral textiles creates a balanced contrast between old and new.

Maintain hardwood furniture by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity fluctuations to prevent wood movement and splitting.
