Beautiful Early 19th Century Elm Refectory Table Seating 8 C. 1820

19th century
Description

A large and beautiful solid elm refectory table with planked cleated top over solid elm blocked feet with original pegged stretcher. The table can be dismantled easily – two very heavy solid block and shaped feet, the three boarded cleated top and a stretcher that unites the legs, gives strength and is held with original triangular pegs which lock the stretcher in.

.

Wonderful colour and very tactile. Natural splits, cracks and losses consistent with 200 + years of use and love and, one must assume, a lot of family parties, good times and good service.

.

These tables are hard to find with original finish and such great character and colour.

.

Will provide great service and look beautiful in any room and seats eight guests in comfort.

.

Made by hand in c. 1820 by a skilled provincial craftsman.

Shown here with a set of early 19th century rush seated spindle back chairs and others available separately.

A good height, so any dining chair with a seat height of 18 inches, plus or minus 1 inch, will work.

.

Strongly recommended, a lovely rustic table with a great colour and loads of character.

.

.

Dimensions are:

.

90 inches long, 32 inches wide, 29.5 inches high

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A refectory table is a long, narrow dining table originally designed for dining hall use in medieval monasteries, later evolving into a standard form for country house dining rooms from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries.

Tables from this era were typically constructed from solid native timbers, such as elm or oak, featuring heavy plank tops supported by trestle ends or stretchered legs held together with traditional wooden dowels and hand-cut joinery.

Authentic pieces display distinct broad grain patterns, characteristic timber shrinkage along the plank seams, natural surface wear, and hand-crafted construction details such as mortise and tenon joints with peg fixings.

An antique refectory table pairs effectively with modern minimalist chairs or mid-century seating, creating a visual balance between modern lines and historic wood textures.

Maintain solid elm furniture by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish periodically to feed the timber and preserve its original patina.
