Robert Belcher Antiques has dated this Anglo Indian Centre Table to the 1860s.

The table is constructed from dense, heavy padauk wood, native to India, with a rich colour and beautifully developed patina. It stands on solid brass castors supporting a substantial lower platform base, which is of cross form and decorated with an intricate carved fruit and vine frieze.

Rising from the platform are four beautifully carved tigers, each connecting to a finely carved and pierced panel featuring a matching fruit and vine design. These panels support a substantial circular central column, which rises to the upper rectangular platform. The hinged top can be raised by releasing the ornate brass catch, allowing the table to be displayed or stored with the top upright.

The magnificent circular top has a distinctive serpentine-profile edge and an elaborately carved and pierced frieze, echoing the decoration of the base. It is constructed from two substantial solid pieces of book matched padauk, displaying a wonderful colour, grain and natural patination.

Rare, highly decorative and exceptionally well conceived, this is an impressive example of Indian Raj period furniture and a particularly striking statement piece.
