George III Silver Nutmeg Grater 1796

18th century
Description

A rare GEORGIAN SILVER NUTMEG GRATER made by Phipps and Robinson in 1796.

Of plain cylindrical form, the flip-up lid opens to reveal the metal grater which has space behind to hold your nutmegs.

A small family armorial of a previous owner is engraved to the lid and this superb Silver Nutmeg Grater is in excellent condition (See condition report below) despite being almost 230 years old.

(Nutmeg was associated with drinking punch in the late 17th and 18th century. It was fashionable for men to carry nutmeg in a pocket-sized silver container with a grater to add freshly grated nutmeg to punch.

During the 17th / 18th century, Nutmeg was a highly valued spice due to its relative scarcity and its many uses. It was used in cooking, as well as for religious, ritual, and medical purposes. In the late 18th century, Nutmeg was being sold at 85-90 shillings per pound. Inflated to today’s prices that is the equivalent of £23 - £25,000 per pound !!!)

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nutmeg graters became popular during the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries when imported spices were valuable status symbols. Individuals carried small, personal silver graters to season food and hot drinks like punch or mulled wine while travelling or dining out.

Georgian nutmeg graters were predominantly crafted from sterling silver, often featuring steel or iron rasping plates inside to withstand grating hard spice. Cylindrical, tubular, and oval box forms were common, frequently finished with hand-engraved crests or engine-turned patterns.

Authentic pieces from the George III period feature British hallmark conventions, including the makers mark, sovereigns head duty mark, lion passant, and specific date letters. Look for period-appropriate construction, such as hand-drawn silver tubing, pinned hinges, and age-related oxidisation in deeper recesses.

Small antique silver curiosities can be displayed on a sideboard top alongside vintage glassware, placed inside a glass-fronted cabinet, or incorporated into a tray display on a desk or coffee table to add historical interest.

Silver pieces should be dusted with a soft, lint-free cloth and polished gently using specialized silver polish only when necessary. Avoid harsh chemical dips or abrasive scrubbing, especially near steel grater inserts, to prevent corrosion and protect the surface patina.
