Victorian Laburnum Wellington Chests by Wylie & Lochhead

19th century
Description

This pair of Victorian laburnum Wellington chests dates to circa 1840 and are attributed to Wylie & Lochhead the prominent Scottish firm from Glasgow.

The square tops are veneered and cross banded in laburnum and ash above end grain edging, which sits above inverted ash thumbnail moulding, with long grain veneers above a solid ash banding. The five graduated drawers are constructed with solid ash linings and fine dovetail joints, fitted with veneered laburnum drawer fronts. The drawers retain their gilt brass locks, ring turned ash key escutcheons and solid turned ash knobs, complemented by the contrasting cross banding throughout.

The pair of Wellington chests retain some of their original internal dividers, with some now missing, while still providing generous and practical storage. The sides are treated with the same level of attention as the fronts, with the ash banding cross banded against the long grain laburnum veneers, suggesting they were commissioned for a prominent interior where the sides were intended to be visible.

The quality of construction and choice of materials point towards a prosperous Scottish workshop, with the unusual use of laburnum and ash reflecting the importance of the commission. The bold proportions and careful execution of the veneers suggest a client who required furniture of both practical use and visual impact.

The Wellington chests are raised on laburnum plinth bases and have a particularly substantial outline, being considerably larger in scale than the standard Wellington chest. Their generous proportions and refined use of contrasting timbers make them an unusual example of this nineteenth century form.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Wellington chest is a tall, narrow British chest of drawers originating in the early nineteenth century, named after the First Duke of Wellington and typically featuring a hinged side flap that secures all drawers when locked.

Victorian Wellington chests were constructed using solid cabinet woods such as mahogany, walnut, rosewood, or laburnum, often featuring pine drawer linings, turned wooden handles, and fine line inlay.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display period joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, original brass keyhole escutcheons, turned timber knobs, and a functioning side-locking bar mechanism.

A matching pair of narrow chests can be positioned symmetrically on either side of a fireplace or doorway, or utilized as oversized bedside storage in rooms with high ceilings.

Regular dusting with a dry microfiber cloth and biannual application of clear beeswax along the grain will preserve the timber, while keeping the piece away from direct sunlight prevents premature fading.
