1900 - 1920
Description

Arts & Crafts ceiling light with a great provenance.

Circa 1905

Height 69cm (this could be reducing by 8cm by shortening the flex).

PROVENANCE: From Barbourne house (Formerly Tintagel) House, Worcester.

History: In 1903 Frederick John Mayers, a carpet designer with a studio in George Street, Kidderminster, purchased the land from James Ward, the Younger, and designed Tintagel which was built in 1904. Mayers had previously owned 54 Hill Grove, Kidderminster, which he had commissioned the famous architect, C F A Voysey to design for him in 1899 (noted in the book ‘C F A Voysey – Architect and Designer 1857 – 1941’ by Brandon-Jones). Mayers was greatly influenced by Voysey when he designed Tintagel and there are many Voysey inspired features, for example the tapered buttresses, the roof lines, the windows including window catches, the panelled doors, the pierced heart details in the staircase and cupboard work etc. He also asked some of his artist friends to design certain features in the house, including the beautiful William Morris inspired cast iron fireplace in the dining room and the oriel window in the sitting room. He named the house Tintagel knowing the original (possibly there was a Pre-Raphaelite William Morris association as well).

Mayers was an associate of the Council of the Society of Designers which included may of the Arts and Crafts Movement designers and craftsmen inspired by William Morris including the architect C F A Voysey. They were represented by The Studio magazine which did valuable work in the creation of intelligent public appreciation of applied art, and made vocal the modern Renaissance (Arts and Crafts Movement) which provided the seeds from which most of the later continental movements in decorative art have grown. Charles Voysey, despite being first and foremost an architect, also liked designing the whole furnishings of his houses including carpet design which formed the close friendship between Voysey and Mayers.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Arts and Crafts ceiling lighting originated in the late 19th century as a reaction against mass industrialisation, emphasising handcraftsmanship, visible joinery, and organic forms. Fixtures often feature hand-hammered metals such as copper and brass alongside stylised plant motifs or simple geometric curves.

Traditional pieces were constructed from solid brass, copper, or wrought iron, frequently showing hand-hammered textures. Glass elements typically included art glass, iridescent glass, or frosted hand-blown glass shades suspended from braided flex cords or chains.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-finished details such as irregular hammering marks, riveted joints, and original patina on untreated metals. Original fittings often incorporate period-appropriate twisted electrical flex wiring or hook fastenings rather than modern machine-stamped components.

This style of lighting pairs well with natural wood furniture, neutral plaster walls, and muted earthy tones to highlight its metallic warmth. Hanging a period pendant over a kitchen island or dining space creates a focal point that bridges traditional and contemporary aesthetics.

To preserve the original patina, clean metal surfaces gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth without harsh chemical polishes. Glass shades should be removed carefully and washed in warm water with mild soap before drying thoroughly prior to reassembly.
