Large 18th Century Japanese Arita Imari Jardiniere

18th century
Description

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this large scale Edo Period (1603-1867) circa 1710, Arita Jardiniere. This increasingly scarce survivor from the early 1700's period is decorated throughout in typical Imari palette, the complex flared body gives rise to an overlaping top rim, the exterior of the Jardiniere vibrantly decorated in traditional blue, orange and gilt enamels of native flora interspersed with red and blue concentric banding, the top rim decorated with opposing bands of crysanthemum. The interior rim of the bowl has been further decorated with sprigs of trailing prunus and roses, whilst the interior base is decorated with a floral scene including grey and yellow enamels, despite its intended use the internal enamels remain vibrant. An increasingly scarce perfect example of Japanese porcelain from the early 1700's period, remaining as functional for use today as it was when manufactured in the kilns of Arita, some 300 years ago.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Imari porcelain originated during the Edo period in the Arita region of Japan and was exported to Europe through the port of Imari by the Dutch East India Company. These pieces gained widespread popularity in 17th and 18th-century European stately homes for their vibrant palette and detailed decoration.

These vessels were crafted from fine kaolin clay fired at high temperatures. The distinct palette typically combines underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze iron-red enamel and gold leaf accents to create dense floral and foliage patterns.

Authentic 18th-century pieces usually exhibit minor irregularities in the potted porcelain, spur marks on the base from kiln firing, and natural wear to the overglaze enamels and gilding. The cobalt blue underglaze often displays slight variations in intensity due to hand-painting techniques.

Place the jardiniere on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or central table surface as a standalone focal point. It can be displayed empty to highlight the internal decoration or styled with simple indoor foliage to contrast against the patterned glaze.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid immersing the vessel in water or using abrasive chemical cleaners, as these can strip or degrade delicate overglaze iron-red enamels and gold leafing.
