Christopher Tombs Antiques Ltd has dated this Burmese Reclining Buddha Statue to the 19th Century.
Red Lacquered Wood | Mandalay Period

The figure is shown in the classic parinirvana pose lying on his right side at the moment of final release into nirvana.
The head rests gently on the right hand, the left arm lies along the body, and the feet are softly stacked.

The serene, closed-eyed expression, elongated earlobes and rounded ushnisha are typical of the refined Mandalay style that emerged in the second half of the 19th century.
Cascading robe folds are carefully modelled, with the borders and sash highlighted in gold and decorative patterning.

The rich terracotta-red ground, where the original gilding has softened with age, gives the sculpture its distinctive warm presence.
Substantial in scale, this is a piece of impressive presence more ambitious than the smaller household shrine figures commonly seen, and closer in spirit to the larger temple and monastery images of the period.

A handsome and contemplative example of late Konbaung early Mandalay-period Burmese Buddhist sculpture.
