A crystoleum is a Victorian method of hand-tinting photographs by adhering an albumen print face-down onto convex glass, removing the paper backing until transparent, and applying oil paint layers to the reverse side.

Crystoleums were created using convex glass plates, albumen photographic prints, starch pastes, transparentising wax or oil, and oil paints applied directly to the back of the glass.

Authentic pieces exhibit a three-dimensional depth produced by the curved glass surface, oil paint backings visible under inspection, and original late 19th-century gilt wood or gesso framing.

Position them symmetrically above a console table, alongside contemporary artwork on a gallery wall, or within a quiet alcove to highlight the contrast between historical framing and modern furnishings.
