Victorian Burr Walnut Bureau De Dame with Brass Inlay, C.1870

19th century
Description

A fine Victorian burr walnut bureau de dame, dating to circa 1870, displaying richly figured veneers throughout and finely detailed with brass line inlay and decorative motifs.

The raised superstructure is enclosed by a pair of panelled doors, each centred with an elegant brass inlaid motif and opening to reveal a fitted interior of pigeonholes, compartments and two small drawers. Above is a beautifully figured top enclosed on three sides by a pierced brass gallery.

Below, the shaped writing surface is particularly well figured and decorated with brass inlay, while a pull-out writing drawer provides a red tooled leather writing surface together with a fitted pen and ink compartment.

The lower section is enclosed by a large panelled cupboard door with striking book-matched burr walnut veneers, opening to reveal a shelved interior. The front is flanked by architectural pilasters with carved corbel and scroll detail, the whole raised on a plinth base with concealed castors.

An unusually decorative and practical piece of Victorian cabinet furniture, combining a compact writing desk with considerable storage. The exceptional burr walnut veneers and restrained brass inlay give the piece a particularly rich appearance.

Circa 1870.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bureau de dame is a small writing cabinet designed specifically for womens correspondence, gaining widespread popularity during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These pieces typically combine a writing surface with small drawers, cupboards, or slots for organizing stationery.

Victorian bureaus were frequently constructed using solid hardwoods such as oak or mahogany as a carcass, finished with high-figured veneers like burr walnut or rosewood. Metal accents, including brass inlay, handles, and castors, were commonly integrated for structural strength and decoration.

Authentic Victorian pieces display period construction techniques, including hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass castors, and natural wood contraction marks. Veneers like burr walnut exhibit distinct, irregular grain patterns and subtle surface patina consistent with nineteenth-century hand finishing.

A Victorian bureau functions well as an accent piece in a study, hallway, or living room, offering modern functionality as a compact workspace or charging station. Placing minimal contemporary decorative objects alongside the piece balances its intricate woodwork and historical silhouette.

Dust surfaces regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that can lift natural veneers. Apply a high-grade beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain to nourish the timber, and wipe brass elements lightly to prevent excess tarnish build-up.
