Description

Pair French Bronze Firedogs Louis XIV Style - Early 19th Century

Sourced in Southwest France, this splendid pair of fire dogs / andirons feature decorative embellished flowers to the tops and fleurs de lys around the circular central ball.

The pair could be used traditionally as firedogs or log supports in an open fireplace or as decorative ornaments.

To the base there are classical masks (marmouset) with further floral decoration. These characteristic grotesque masks, inspired by the figures found in Gothic and Renaissance architecture, add considerable character to the pair.

They are in very good antique condition, having been professionally cleaned and lacquered.

French Antiques and Objets d'art

We specialise in French antiques and work with interior designers, trade and retail in the UK and worldwide. Every piece is examined and restored when necessary to a very high standard by a professionally trained restorer with years of experience.

We have an online store and viewing in person is unfortunately not an option. If you wish to return an item please send us written notification within 48 hours of receipt. Returns can be made up to 14 days after delivery. The item must be returned in the same condition as it left and a full refund less any delivery and return delivery costs incurred by us will be issued.

Packing and Delivery

We ship larger pieces, such as tables and washstands, with specialised couriers and smaller pieces, such as sculptures and lights, with FedEx or the post.

We take great care to ensure that our pieces are well-packaged for transport. Deliveries take on average between 1 week and 3 weeks (possibly longer, depending on your location, times of year and any other factors).

We have stock in Kent and France and can provide quotes to deliver from both stores. Should a piece need importing from France, the price would be DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) to include shipping, UK import VAT and customs clearance; there are no hidden costs. Please contact us by email or Whatsapp Link if you need a quote.

Payment

We accept payment by bank transfer, credit card, debit card or PayPal in either Sterling or Euros. If you purchase through Selling Antiques you can either request a delivery quote from us before payment or we will add this once we receive confirmation of your purchase.

General Information

As with all antiques, there may be small normal signs of wear and tear due to the age of a piece and its history. We aim to describe our pieces accurately – please ask for more description and photos if you would like more information. You can see our ranges, important information and terms and conditions on our website www.pyrontique.com.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis XIV style fireplace accessories are recognised for their grand classical symmetry, heavy castings, and intricate decorative motifs such as acanthus leaves, heraldic fleur-de-lis, mascarons, and flame finials.

Traditional French firedogs were primarily cast from bronze, brass, or wrought iron, often finished with gilding or dark patination to withstand high heat while displaying detailed craftsmanship.

Authentic 19th-century pieces usually exhibit hand-finished details, seam lines from historical casting methods, natural surface patination or oxidisation, and structural iron rear bars or mounting points.

In modern interiors, antique firedogs can be placed inside an empty hearth or alongside a contemporary wood burner to add texture, historic character, and architectural interest to the living space.

Clean antique bronze firedogs using a soft, dry cloth or gentle soft-bristle brush to remove dust. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that can strip natural patination or gilding.
