Pair of Aubusson Covered Late 18th Century Louis Xv Style Armchairs.

18th century
Description

A pair of wonderfully romantic small French Louis XV style chairs with elegant, fluid lines Their frames crafted from polished hardwood (likely walnut or fruitwood) featuring a curved cabriole leg design that tapers down beautifully.

Subtle, ornate floral or scroll carvings accent the top center of the backrests and the front apron just beneath the seats.

The chairs feature animal and pastoral themed Aubusson tapestry which is fixed with classic trim along the edges. The backrests depict charming, pastoral or pictorial narrative scenes.

One prominently features a large cockerel and a cat in a rustic, outdoor setting. Another features a deer. The seats and the small padded rests on the armchairs (manchettes) are also upholstered in a coordinating dense floral and foliage pattern, pulling together muted tones of beige, green, blue, and deep red.

Firm of joint and seat but with love warn tapestry upholstery, they are the perfect small seating solution for those who would love a slice of rustic European charm in their interior

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis XV style armchairs, often termed fauteuils, are characterised by light carved wooden frames, curved cabriole legs, and asymmetrical cartouche-shaped backs. Originating in 18th-century France, they emphasised comfort and intimate salon conversation over rigid formal seating.

These chairs typically feature solid carved hardwood frames made of walnut, beech, or fruitwood. The upholstery consists of hand-woven Aubusson tapestry panels, crafted from wool and silk threads using traditional flat-weave techniques.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display hand-carved joinery with peg construction rather than modern screws, along with natural unevenness in the wood. Original Aubusson tapestry upholstery exhibits hand-spun wool fibres, subtle vegetable dye fading on the front compared to the back, and hand-stitched seams.

Position a pair of fauteuils opposite a modern streamlined sofa to create a balanced conversational area. The contrast between intricate carved woodwork and contemporary minimalist decor highlights the historical character of the seating.

Keep upholstered antique chairs away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent dye fading and fabric degradation. Dust the woodwork with a soft microfibre cloth and vacuum tapestries gently using a low-suction brush attachment.
